Mill Pond Salt Marsh Restoration Project

Site Locus

Mill Pond is part of the Pamet River system in Truro, MA. Mill Pond has an extensive history dating back to the Revolutionary War Period as one of the largest salt works in New England. An undersized culvert constructed in the 1990s under Mill Pond Road restricts tidal flow to Mill Pond and has compromised salt marsh resources in Mill Pond. Mill Pond Road and Depot Road, located along the north side of Mill Pond, do not drain properly during storm events and are in need of resiliency improvements to ensure public safety.

The Town of Truro has identified this as a priority area for improvement and is planning to replace the undersized culvert with a larger structure that will allow increased tidal flushing to restore degraded salt march resources in Mill Pond. Mill Pond Road embankment armoring will be replaced and the roadway will be repaved. Depot Road stormwater drainage and bank stabilization improvements are also proposed.
